BRUSHWORK What looks like a routine portrait commission for a flamboyant former vice president of the United States quickly turns to disaster when he is murdered after only one session. The artist turned detective, Paul Zacher, becomes intrigued by the reason for his presence in San Miguel, but his curiosity turns to desperation when accumulating evidence indicates that Zacher himself is the killer. When a reading of the victim's will reveals the motive, Paul and Maya are forced to flee across central Mexico to avoid arrest for murder. After one of the most ruthless conglomerates in the country lines up with the police against the Zacher Agency, Paul goes on the offensive and sets a trap that exposes the plotters. When he is nearly trapped himself, he is forced to kill one of them in a face-to-face shoot out. Brushwork is the third mystery title in the Murder in Mexico series.

I very much enjoyed this mystery, set in the very real city of San Miguel de Allende. I was attracted to John Scherber's Murder in Mexico series because I live as an expatriate in Mexico like many of the characters in his novels. While they live in a more cosmopolitan area than I do, and definitely mingle in so-called "High Society" which is completely lacking in my town, I find the author's insight into Mexican character and culture completely in line with my own experiences, from corrupt officials to poorly constructed machinery, but those things are softened by the positive experiences of colorful towns and kind-hearted people. I read "Twenty Centavos" first, and really enjoyed it, but "Brushwork" seems even richer in detail, mystery and characterizations. Anyone who enjoys a well-constructed mystery should enjoy this tale whether they are invested in Mexico or not. I will be reading the rest of the series for sure.Product details

Could not put it down. I love the descriptions of San Miguel de Allende. You will think you know the town after reading this series. It paints a picture that make you feel like you are in the town and traveling the streets with them.
I purchased this great little mystery on my and didn't know until I read the Author's Note at the beginning of the book that Brushwork is the third in a series. I'd already downloaded it so I decided to give it a try anyway. I'm so glad I did. I was hooked from the first page, couldn't put it down and finished it the next day. Now I can't wait to go back, start from the beginning and get to know these characters better. I recently finished the "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" series and loved it. I'm so happy to have stumbled upon something similar a great mystery series with all the right elements to keep you turning those pages as fast as you can while your mind is racing to figure out "whodunnit."
very enjoyable -- keeps your interest --
This is the third book from the "Murder in Mexico" series. Good read and nice development of the characters. The characters are very likable, but not without flaws, which makes them believable. I'm beginning to feel like I will bump into Paul Zacher one of these days here in San Miguel! It isn't necessary to read the first two books in the series before you read this book, but you won't want to miss them "Twenty Centavos" and "The Fifth Codex." Twenty Centavos is my favorite so far!
This is the third book of his series that I have read and he has changed his stroke on this one..He is being more light and sexy than he has been before. I think it is a good fit but it makes me unsure of whom I am reading. The nice thing is all the characters are starting to have a life of their own and again I will look forward to reading the next page. I still enjoy reading about all the places they go in SMA which I have enjoyed also. I think this may be his best yet for me..
Another bright and fun mystery in which i was fully immersed. I enjoy learning about a painter's view, tools and products as well as being thrown onto a mystery ride i don't want to disembark.
Thank you for another joyous page-turner.
Mr. Scherber is an OUTSTANDING writer. I read this series and wanted to go find the man and thank him for his books.
Mr. Scherber brings his wit and philosophies of life to his skilled story-telling.
Highly recommend this author and this series!
